James Deen is a disgraceful human being, and not for being a sex worker. Multiple women have come forward with credible allegations of rape and beating. Pornography industry groups have severed ties with the unsavory actor. His firm, James Deen Productions, was recently fined nearly $77,875 by the state of California for violating condom and workplace regulations. Deen stands accused of failing to provide condoms, vaccines, or medical examinations to sex workers in his employ. Four of the nine violations issued were so serious that “death or serious harm could result from the actual hazardous condition” according to the report.
In response, Deen filed a a Cal/OSHA complaint about Bellator MMA and its parent company, media conglomerate Viacom. The adult film actor and producer has no connection to mixed martial arts what so ever.
Deen’s bizarre claim is that Bellator and Viacom are as guilty as he is of exposing people to blood borne pathogens. While there have been no confirmed cases of serious disease transmission via blood in MMA, the difference is that Bellator follows the rules around blood borne pathogens, requiring for example HIV and HEP B and C blood tests, while Deen was not following the law. If Bellator didn’t follow the law, they would lose their promoters license. But they do.
You can’t pick and choose how to enforce the law, Deen said in a recent statement. Sex workers should not be held to different standards under the same regulations as their mainstream counterparts.
While both the adult film and professional fighting industries require their performers to undergo testing for HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis, and the like, only the adult industry is being fined and reprimanded.
The guys on SB Nation’s If I Did It podcast covered the story.
Michael Weinstein, founder of the Aids Healthcare Foundation which advocates for condom use, was asked about Deen’s complaint against MMA.
How great is the credibility of a man who has been accused of rape by eight women? Weinstein replied.
