Holly Holm’s defeat of Ronda Rousey is nearly universally considered to be the one of the greatest upsets in MMA history. Anyone who thought it wasn’t should be driving a new car from their winnings. But George St-Pierre vs. Matt Serra 1, while no Mike Tyson vs. Buster Douglas, is widely considered to be the greatest upset in the sport ever.

GSP prepared inadequately for the Serra fight. He had several family issues, and he lost his focus.

“Let’s just say he partied a little bit too much,” said his former manager Stephane Patry.

GSP spoke recently with Canada’s SportsNet, and said that the loss could be the best thing that ever happened to Rousey.

“In this game, no one’s invincible,” said GSP. “Sometimes you zig when you should zag.”

“I needed to beat a lot of my own demons, a lot of my fear. And I came back stronger.

“So in a way for Ronda it’s sad that she lost, but maybe it could be the best thing that ever happened to her, in that she will come back much stronger.”

“The fact that I lost made me realize that I was a human being. It was very hard to come back from a loss. I needed a sports psychologist. Because what is very important to a fighter is the confidence and sometimes with a loss like this, you can lose your confidence.”

“It taught me what it takes to become world champion. And when I lost to Matt Serra, it taught me what it takes to stay world champion.

“You know when you become world champion at 25 years old and everybody around you – in the gym, everywhere – tell you how great you are and things like that, it makes you believe that you’re in a box that separates you from the other fighters. But this box, this line is an illusion. And that’s what happened. Even though I’m not a cocky guy, I got caught in those situations, many other things. I made many mistakes.”

The sports psychologist directed GSP to write Matt Serra’s name on a brick, and toss it into the icy waters of the Saint Lawrence River. GSP hasn’t lost since, defeating a dozen top fighters in a row.

“Actually I thought it was kind of weird but I felt better after,” St-Pierre said.

If Rousey had some family problems, and didn’t train adequately for the fight, there are worse things she could do than write Holly Holm’s name on a brick and throw it into the Atlantic. But it may be too that Holly Holm didn’t get where she was by winning a reality TV series. It could be that Holly Holm is the greatest fighter in women’s combat sports history.

We’ll be watching.
