Russian amateur MMA promotion Arrows Street Fight Championship came up with this idea back in 2013. According to the YouTube description box this was done because “After two years of arguing we have finally decided to hold our fights at a soccer field. No more sand in eyes, no more arenas built inside of restaurants..”

For those unaware usually Arrows holds events in a sand enclosure which like they say could end up in fighter’s eyes. It could even be used as a weapon like Chong Li used against Frank Dux (played by Jean Claude Van Damme) in Bloodsport but I digress.

While this may seem like a strange, peculiar idea upon first glance it has potential and even some advantages versus modern mainstream MMA events which are held in the trademarked cage. The real problem with the cage is when you are watching it live in the arena it can be difficult to see what is going on depending where you are seated. Even in the expensive ringside seats it is difficult to see as the poles and the fence obstruct your vision.

The great thing about having MMA events in a soccer field is fans have a clear view of what is going on no matter where you are seated. No more staring up at the big screen when you paid top dollar for tickets.

It would change the sport of MMA as well as there would be no more pushing opponents up against the cage or wall walking back to your feet. Though it seems like this idea hasn’t caught steam unfortunately as there don’t appear to be more videos like this one.
