Japan has a rich history of making ‘interesting’ match-ups in combat sports. In 2006 at Pride Bushido 19, hometown star Ikuhisa Minowa was matched up with 7’2″ Giant Silva.
It was an entertaining fight to say the least, as Silva clearly outmatched in the skill department, but with a such a height advantage posed some problems for Minowa.
As the fight stars, Giant Silva slowly stalks Minowa who is keeping his distance and feinting takedowns. In a surprise move, Minowa does a front roll at Giant Silva right into a single leg takedown, who tries to sprawl, but Minowa gets the fight to the ground. Minowa lands on top of guard before briefly passing to side mount.
The two battle for position as Giant Silva tries to control the fight in open guard with Minowa struggle to free himself from Silva’s strong grip. Minowa eventually passes guard and settles into side mount. Minowa starts to land strong punches, elbows, and knees to the body of Silva.
In a rare finish, the knees to the body and a few to head by Minowa result in verbal submission due to strikes.
