One can only guess what was going through the mind Atilla Kubilay when he stepped into the ring against Richard Bowkett.

During the pre-fight stare down the hyper aggressive Kubilay landed what my very well be the most despicable cheap shot in MMA history. As Bowkett offered to touch gloves Kubilay lunged out and cracked his opponent with a left hand before the bout had even begun.

In a larger promotion like the UFC this likely would have ended the fight with a disqualification loss and a hefty fine being handed to Kubilay, but in the appropriately named British promotion Cage Rage the bout was allowed to continue.

Kubilay came out wild but soon found himself on the ground. He was able to reverse position and end up on top in a front headlock position from which he landed several illegal knees to the head of a grounded opponent. As the referee attempted to separate the two men Kubilay refused to halt his vicious assault. The referee was then left no other option than to apply a rear naked choke to restrain the violent Kubilay.

Atilla Kubilay was disqualified for his atrocious conduct during the bout. He would go on to fight one more time in his career, winning by first round TKO.

Below is a blow-by-blow recount of the fight:

In the pre-fight staredown, Kubilay punched Bowkett with a right hand. The commentators didn’t seem surprised. They were talking to Bowkett. They continued. The first round began. Kubilay landed a leg kick. They clinched. Bowkett worked for a double. Kubilay was defending. Kubilay rolled. They rolled some more, Bowkett was on top. Kubilay on top and he turtled him up. He kneed him on the ground and again and he wouldnt’ stop attacking. The referee hauled him off. He had Kubilay in a rear-naked choke and that looked tight. Kubilay got out. People came to surround him and he was disqualified.
