There are many how to guides out there on how to land or defend a kick, but what happens if it misses?
While kicking can be a powerful tool in a fight, there is also some risk involved and missing a big roundhouse kick can leave you off balance and wide open for a counter attack.
In the video below from martial arts YouTube channel fightTIPS, Shane gives up some tips on how to recover if we miss our target when throwing the round house kick.

Shane’s first piece of advice is perhaps the most simple but it is usually the simple techniques that you are going to remember in a actual fight. Shane recommends simply going into a defensive shell if you miss a kick, including bringing your leg up to defend against the low kick which is a common counter.
Another way to recover after missing a kick is throwing what Shane likes to call a ‘recovery kick.’ This is thrown with the same leg as your first kick and Shane recommends throwing a side kick to your opponent’s body to keep them off of you. The side kick is a powerful technique from traditional martial arts like taekwondo and karate that is very much underutilized in modern MMA.
Lastly, the third way to recover after missing a kick is to use all that momentum from the kick to turn it into a spinning attack like a spinning back fist or elbow. It can also be a spin kick like a wheel kick or even a spinning back kick if you’ve got the ability.
