Hapkido is a Korean martial art that borrows techniques from many other different arts. It is seldom seen in MMA type competition because its primary focus is in it’s self defense application. It includes both striking and grappling techniques as well as focusing on two ranges – close range and long range.
Judo on the other hand is very much a sport-based martial art but don’t let that fool you. It is very applicable in self defense if not more so than many self proclaimed ‘self defense’ oriented martial arts. Judo is seen in MMA competition and is an Olympic sport as well. It is strictly a grappling-based martial art but some schools practice striking techniques in various forms and kata.

The following YouTube video showcases a fun, wild fight between high level practitioners of each of these martial arts. The hapkido practitioner is wearing a gi, while the judo practitioner is wearing trunks surprisingly. This was not good strategy on the hapkido guy’s end though perhaps it was a stipulation before the fight took place.
This gives the judo guy a big advantage and makes it much easier to grab a hold of his opponent and hurl him through the air. Judokas are also experts at using their own gi as handles to apply submissions and throws even when their opponent is not wearing one.
Early on in the video, the hapkido guy is dominating the fight with very good striking including a leg sweep that you usually only see in the movies. Shortly after a minute in though the judo guy finally gets a hold of his opponent and throws him around like a rag doll. The end comes shortly thereafter when the judoka locks up an armbar which the hapkido practitioner does not know to defend and is forced to tap out.
