There is probably no major new techniques left in martial arts. Refinements are endless, and set ups are endless, but there are only so many way to make a human being nap or snap, and Judo figured most of them out a long time ago.

However, there are moves that grow in popularity. One of them is the Short Choke. The figure four grip rear naked choke has historically been the one that people try to finish with. It has become all the more popular as joint locks have become vanishingly rare at the elite level.

Although it has been around forever (UFC Hall of Famer Randy Couture used it to win his first fight, in 1997) the Short Choke has been used with increasing frequency in 2015.

The great Jeremy Horn demonstrates why, when, and how it can be a superior choke.

“Yep, Jeremy taught me that after Trigg 1 and I used it for Trigg II,” said UFC Hall of Famer Matt Hughes. “Frank Trigg was great for RNC training…”

2016 will be Jeremy Horn’s 20th year as a mixed martial arts fighter. Conor McGregor has had 21 pro fights; Jeremy Horn once did 21 fights in a year. He is a veteran of the UFC, WEC, PRIDE, Bellator, Pancrase, IFL, King of the Cage, and the International Fighting Championships among countless others.

Horn’s list of opponents includes Randy Couture, Forrest Griffin, Chuck Liddell, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, Anderson Silva, ChaelSonnen, Dan Severn, and over 100 others. ‘Gumby’ put Liddell to sleep, beat Sonnen three times, and knocked out Griffin for the first time. And in a sport profoundly concerned with CTE, At 40 is is completely healthy, still fighting, and runs Jeremy Horn’s Elite Performance MMA in Sandy, Utah.
