The flying side kick is a technique usually seen in traditional martial arts like karate and taekwondo, but can it be used successfully in modern MMA?

Though seldom seen in high level MMA competition, the flying side kick has in fact been pulled off before in the UFC and in the heavyweight division no less! Don’t forget, it was implement by Fabricio Werdum in his second bout against Travis Browne where Werdum literally ran across the cage and stuffed his foot in Browne’s face with the flying side kick.

Browne was able to withstand the blow but what a statement that made and all the momentum was now on Werdum’s side after the kick landed and he went on to dominate the fight.

In the following video from martial arts YouTube channel ‘fightTIPS’ we find out how to throw the flying side kick just like Fabricio Werdum in case we ever have to defend ourselves or if we have the confidence to throw it in an actual MMA fight.

According to fightTIPS, this technique is one of the most powerful kicks you can throw as your entire body weight is behind the kick as well as the momentum from your run.

What’s great about this kick is the amount of distance you can cover. This makes it a great opening move like we saw implemented by Werdum in the Browne fight.

Before you practice the actual full technique including the run, Shane from fightTIPS recommends first practicing how to throw a normal side kick which is demonstrated in the video below.
