Even if you’re pretty confident in your ability to defend yourself, you might still slightly worry about what will happen if a faster, less technical fighter rushes you with strikes. The techniques mentioned in the video below are sure to help you overcome that fear!

Turning a fight into a simple slugfest is one of the best ways to shut down a more technical fighter if they aren’t prepared to deal with it. Fighters like Diego Sanchez are often able to overwhelm their opponents with forward pressure and swarms of punches. It is also what you’re most likely to encounter if you find yourself in a street defense situation against an untrained, unskilled opponent.

Common sense would say to pump a jab out into their face, use your footwork and to stay on the outside. But what are you to do if that isn’t stopping them in their tracks? There comes a time when you may have to embrace the storm that they’re bringing to you, but you still don’t want to completely throw your technique out of the window.

This is when slipping, bobbing and weaving all come into play. They are the basics of boxing defense and without them, you’re almost asking to be knocked out when in a striking exchange. It is something that you can practice alone while shadowboxing or with a partner. The ability to effectively move your head, while maintaining your balance and throwing counter punches of your own will either catch them clean or cause your opponent to back off and rethink their strategy, if not both.

The key to self defense is being prepared both mentally and physically for anything and everything at all times. What is your biggest concern about a potential self defense situation? And do you have a plan for if it happens? Let us know in the comments after checking out the video below!
