As in any sport, freak accidents do happen in mixed martial arts, and sometimes they can have a devastating effect on the outcome of the fight, as was the case in this video.

The bout took place at an event held by the long-running Xtreme Caged Combat promotion and it wasn’t long before the action heated up in the cage.

Just seconds into the match-up the fighter in the white trunks landed a head kick on his opponent in the black shorts, but despite having taken the blow flush to the face he took it well and kept on fighting.

Needless to say, he wasn’t keen to take more punishment like that, however, so he immediately sought an opportunity to take the fight to the mat.

Quickly wrapping his arms around his opponent, the fighter in the black shorts looked to execute a suplex throw, but it didn’t go quite as intended as in the process the top of his adversary’s head spiked sickeningly hard onto the canvas, brutally knocking him out.

At first, it seems like the referee might not have noticed what had just happened, though a woman in the crowd certainly did as she can be heard frantically screaming, help him! at the top of her lungs.

Thankfully the ref does then rush in to save the unconscious fighter from further damage, just as his opponent is in the midst of landing a further ground and pound blow to his head, apparently unaware of what he’d just done moments earlier.

The result of an impact like that on the neck and spine could be catastrophic, and indeed there have been instances of fighters being paralyzed as a result of having their head spiked accidentally in the past.

Thankfully that wasn’t the case here though, with the downed fighter reportedly regaining consciousness and making his way back to his feet under his own steam by the time the final decision was being read out.
