Aikido is a grappling-based Japanese martial art that focuses on self-defense, as well as using your opponents’ own energy against them. It employs the use of throws and joint locks, particularly focusing on wrist locks and related techniques.
Aikido is rarely seen in modern MMA type competition because it claims to focus on self-defense applications. It also does not appear to be a very effective or realistic martial art. Many of its techniques and training seem to lack realism, and the following YouTube video from Russian outdoor MMA promotion ARROWS reiterates that point.
The aikido ‘master’ is in the white pants, and according from the video description, he hails from deep Russia and is 46 years old. His opponent looks to be just a brawler with not the best technique.
As soon as the fight begins, you can tell the aikido master’s techniques aren’t based in reality. The way he just lunges forward with his hands down and chin up shows that he has no idea what he’s doing and is probably going to get hurt.

He connects with a left jab that appeared to briefly bother his opponent, but that’s all the success he has in this one. His opponent pours it on afterward with a barrage of hard punches which the aikido master has no clue how to defend or move away from. He gets dropped then hit again on the ground and the fight is quickly stopped.
