The size difference in this fight is really something to behold. It’s 5’8 Igor Vovchanchyn taking on the massive ‘Polar Bear’ Paul Varelans who is 6’8 and outweighs Igor by over a hundred pounds! Not to mention Varelans is a UFC veteran nonetheless who had eight fights with the organization in it’s early years.
Igor’s sure got his work cut out for him in the one. Most would be overwhelmed before the fight even began. From the first exchange we can see that is not the case however as Vovchanchyn starts blasting his enormous foe with hard, looping ‘Russian style’ hooks then intelligently moves out of his opponents massive punching range.
It’s going to take more than that to take out ‘The Polar bear’ though. Varelans starts to use his size to his advantage, pushing his smaller opponent up against the cage and putting his weight on him. He tries to drag it to the ground but Igor lowers his center of gravity and manages to stay on his feet then starts blasting away again with his signature hooks.

According to commentator and mixed martial arts legend Bas Rutten “This Igor guy he’s hitting very, very hard. He’s got good conditioning also. He’s a very dangerous opponent.” Upon first glance you would think it’d be the other way around with Igor being in over his head but instead it is the massive, slower man who is getting utterly destroyed despite having a foot of height to his advantage and over one hundred pounds!
Halfway through the video it’s clear Igor is the much better striker despite the huge size disadvantage. Varelans might as well be a heavy bag with arms in there, he’s having zero success. Varelans finally succumbs to the abuse just before the six minute mark awarding Igor Vovchanchyn the victory by TKO.
