Tameshiwari is a martial arts method used in competition, demonstration, and testing, wherein a martial artist uses some hardened part of the body to break one or more objects, using the techniques honed in their art form. The most common object of the break is a piece of wood, though it is not uncommon to break bricks, cinder blocks, stones, tiles, bottles, and glass, among other objects. The striking surface is most commonly the hand or foot, but may also be a fingertip, toe, head, elbow, knuckle, or knee, and can include other body parts.

A successful break requires delivering energy sufficient to overcome, via mass displacement, the tensor and flexion forces of the object, where the kinetic energy is given by 1/2 m*v2. Thus, either the speed of the striking surface (hand/foot/other bodypart) has to be high enough, or the striker must be strong enough to increase delivered mass to exceed the struck object’s threshold.

#yeahscience.

On July 1, 2008, human weapon Susan Sykes (real name Busty Heart) appeared on the third season of America’s Got Talent, and demonstrated her remarkable breaking talents. This, truly represents the pinnacle of martial arts training, uniting as it does the heart, mind, and spirit.

Unfortunately, the judges on America’s Got Talent very evidently hate martial arts, and unanimously voted “No.” Heart received redemption two years later when she appeared on the unbiased German talent show Das Supertalent, and received all “Yes” votes. Ms. Heart eventually reached the highly coveted semi-final round, placing her in the top 40 out of 41,000 auditioners, and striking a major blow for martial arts.

The success was replicated two more years later, on France’s Got Talent. Even the cheese-eating surrender monkeys can recognize martial arts skills at this level.

Ms. Heart also works as a bodyguard, and was seen in action in the award-winning documentary The Dictator.

For the last 20 years, the Boston native has operated a martial arts training facility “Busty Heart’s Place,” in Turtle Point, Pennsylvania. Some have erroneously claimed that the dojo is in reality a Go Go club; emphatically, this is false.  Now in her early 60s, grandmaster Heart has achieved success sufficient to own her own island off the coast of Maine, and will go down as one of the most innovative breaking masters in the history of martial arts.

For the record, that is an M cup.
