Does this man look familiar to you? Meet Abbas Alizada, a man from the war-torn city of Kabul, Afghanistan who bears a striking resemblance to Bruce Lee. Alizada first became hooked on the icon’s action movies when he was 14 years old. At that time, his family was too poor to afford the fees at an academy of Wushu, but the trainer took him under his wing. Wushu is a general term used for Chinese martial arts. It is also an exhibition and full-contact sport derived from traditional Chinese martial arts.
Alizada will be 22 years old this year, but he is not just another doppelganger. Just like the kung-fu master, his skills consist of high kicks, lightning-fast punches, nunchacku maneuvers, fingertip push-ups and backflips that might make UFC star Sage Super Northcutt jealous. A few years ago, Alizada participated in the Kabul Wushu (Martial Arts) Championship and received a gold medal in the 56kg weight division.
On holidays he likes to go to Darulaman Palace to train and spend time with his fans and friends. His dream is to escape the conflicts in Afghanistan and visit Hollywood one day. Speaking in Dari, a variety of the Persian language, the ‘Afghan Bruce Lee’ told Reuters in 2014:
“I want to be a champion in my country and a Hollywood star. The destruction here makes me sad, but it also inspires me. The only news that comes from Afghanistan is about war … I am happy that my story is a positive one.”
Alizada has spent more than 7 years training to become like his childhood hero and Hollywood film directors should pay careful attention. As he recently said on his Facebook page and Twitter: If you do not prepare for the future, soon you will notice that you are in the past.
