People don’t realize that Tony Stark has been putting in a lot of work as an actor. We’ve previously talked about how he’s taken the exotic forms of martial arts such as Wing Chun into his role as the famous detective Sherlock Holmes in the film Sherlock Holmes. Check out the fight scene where he uses it in a bare knuckle scene here.

But soon after that film he went back to filming Iron Man 2. In this little scene we see him working with Jon Favreau’s character Happy Hogan. Hogan is being used as a workout dummy as he’s seen wearing headgear and a body pad. He throws a one two where Stark ducks underneath both and counters with two body hooks. He then parries Hogan’s right cross but mistakenly counters with a cross-elbow.
Hogan’s character was caught by surprised and asks What’s that? Stark responds with It’s called mixed martial arts…it’s been around…three weeks. But Hogan rebuttals that he knows what it is and called it dirty boxing and adds that there’s nothing new about it.
Whatever Stark intended, it demonstrates that the character is much more than a rich, billionaire, philanthropist that wears one of the most high tech robotic suits in Marvel films. Although he probably couldn’t stand toe-to-toe against Captain Rogers, aka Captain America without his iron suit.
Further into the clip, we also get to see a glimpse of Scarlett Johansson as the Black Widow prior to her revealing herself.
Hogan tried to teach her character Natalie Rushman the basics of fighting. But the moment Hogan throws a punch, Johansson’s character magically catches it, hop into the air with a pro wrestling-like leglock to the head to throw down Hogan and lands applying some sort of armlock that has Happy Hogan screeching in pain.
It looked a little fantastical, but Downey and Johansson have been putting in some physical work into their characters.
