Twitter reacts to the greatest moment at UFC 235
Twitter reacted when Anthony Smith passed on winning the title via DQ.
UFC 235 had thrilling fights and finishes including a title defense by arguably the greatest fighter in MMA history, but the greatest moment came in a loss.
Jon Jones has issues with rules. His sole loss comes from breaking the anachronistic downward elbow prohibition. This time he drove his knee into the face of Anthony Smith. Various interpretations of the downed fighter rule has been a source of controversy in the sport for the past two years, but Jones broke the rule in every definition.
All Smith had to do was say one word when the referee asked if he could fight – “no” – and the title would be his. There would be an immediate rematch, and Smith as champion would get points on a monster pay-per-view. His financial future would be set, and he would be champion of the world.
But without hesitation, he said “yes” and fought on.
I said at the beginning I wanted to win the title,” said Smith post fight. “I know as well as anyone I could’ve sat there and taken the DQ win. But I want to win it, I don’t want to steal it.
