Fighter’s health too often suffers as athletes, coaches, and referees all have incentives to not stop a fight.

Fighters are game by selection – the best possess a will to win greater than the will to live. Referees must impossibly balance a fighter’s livelihood against his health, in a hurting game. And corners are often functionally employees of the fighter, and adopt the same, dangerous attitude towards ending a fight. As a consequence, fighters’ health too often suffers.

Thus when a fighter’s corner stops a fight, it should be applauded. That happened at UFC 232.

Bantamweight Petr Yan battered Douglas Silva de Andrade, drawing comparisons with a prime Fedor:

And then Silva de Andrade’s corner made the extremely difficult but necessary decision to stop the fight.

So respect to the corner.

And monster respect to ‘No Mercy’, who is now 12-1, on a six-fight win streak, three in the UFC with the sole loss of his career avenged, and giving every appearance of having the potential to be the next big thing.
