Mauricio “Shogun” Rua fights Antonio Rogerio Nogueira in a trilogy bout at UFC on ESPN 14 this Saturday on Fight Island in Abu Dhabi. Lil’ Nog will never fight again, win, lose, or draw. And Shogun, who has fought 38 times over the past 18 years, said at a virtual media day, that he will follow not long after.
My idea is two or three more fights [before] I finish my career, said Rua, 38.
Of course, Shogun promised his wife the same thing, years ago.
I broke [the promise], but now it’s real, said Shogun with a laugh. Now, two or three fights I stop. A long time ago I said to my wife I said, two more fights. I had 15 or 16 fights.
Rua is coming off a controversial Split Draw over Paul Craig at UFC on ESPN+ 22 on November 16, 2019 in Sao Paulo, Brazil.
Everybody saw that I won the fight, he said. But it’s not under our control. Unfortunately, we lose a lot with a decision like that. It has an impact. But what can we do? It’s not in our control and it was upsetting.
On Saturday, Shogun has a trilogy fight vs. Lil Nog, going into it 2-0.
I’m very happy for this [fight], said Shogun. “Nogueira is a legend in the sport. I am his last fight. I’m very happy. Nogueira, he’s a good fighter and a good person.
I don’t put any pressure on myself for my last fights. The only thing I want is to give my best.
