Early in her career, Amanda Nunes moved through several teams, pushing her record to a respectable 9-4. Since moving to ATT in 2014, “The Lioness” has won 11 straight fights, becoming champion of the UFC’s women’s bantamweight and featherweight divisions. In the co-main event of UFC 259 on Saturday night, Nunes faces challenger Megan Anderson.
Anderson faces +700 odds, the longest of anyone in Nunes’ career in the UFC. But at the pre-fight press conference on Thursday, the Aussie fighting out of Glory MMA in Missouri, said she possesses plusses beyond any challenger to date.
I feel like I’m the first true featherweight that she’s fought that brings a lot of power, said Anderson. I know Felicia [Spencer] is a featherweight, but I think styles make fights. I think I have a lot of power that I bring to the table, and I don’t think she’s seen that in a very long time.
I think everyone has holes in their game. I think you just have to find them. We’ve looked at the tape, and we’ve got a gameplan, so we’re ready to capitalize on those moments when we see them.
It’s been a long road to get here, but I’m glad that I finally got here. I grew a lot as as person, as a martial artist getting to this point. I’m just ready to put on a show. Everyone’s invincible until they’re not.
It’s hard to reconcile Anderson’s statement about Nunes never having fought a true featherweight, given that the Brazilian knocked out the MMA GOAT Cris Cyborg in 51 seconds at UFC 232 on December 29, 2018. UG, how do you see the fight going? And what odds do you think are reasonable? Jon Anik, a betting man through and through, said he thought +750 was tempting. You tempted?
