When referee Marc Goddard stopped the Megan Anderson vs. Cat Zingano fight, and declared Anderson the winner due to TKO (eye injury) at 1:01 of Round 1, many mistaken fans argued that he should have given a timeout. If a legally executed strike causes an injury, there are no timeouts.

The Dean of MMA Referees ‘Big’ John McCarthy explained why Goddard’s call was the right one, in a few short tweets.

Thanks and respect to Goddard for doing a great job, and McCarthy for explaining it.
