Floyd Mayweather boxed Conor McGregor in 2017. It did 4.3 million pay-per-view buys, the second largest in history, behind only Mayweather vs. Pacquiao, which did 4.6.
Mayweather, now 43, never boxed again; his record stands at 50-0, one better than Rocky Marciano’s formerly cursed 49-0. “Money” reportedly made $9 million for a boxing sparring exhibition in Japan on New Years’ Eve 2018 vs. kickboxer Tenshin Nasukawa, but otherwise has not competed. Still, talk of a rematch vs. McGregor endures.
During a recent interview with Zack Jones for Forbes, Mayweather said he may do another exhibition in Japan.
We’re working on some things right now for Tokyo, whether 2020 or 2021, said Mayweather.
An MMA rematch is, however, not on the table.
No, he said. I think just like how winning teams receive home-field advantage in the playoffs…you don’t fix what isn’t broken, and my record isn’t broken.
The possibility of a boxing rematch got a qualified maybe.
For now, I’m happily retired,” said Mayweather. “You never know, but it would have to be worth it. Just like gambling right? Juice worth the squeeze no matter who the opponent is.
