Welterweight G.O.A.T. Georges St-Pierre successfully moved up to middleweight and defeated then champion Michael Bisping. However, GSP self-described his method of increasing weight as eating as much as could at every meal. That lead to a diagnosis of ulcerative colitis which caused him to promptly drop the belt. GPS’s teammate Bellator MMA welterweight champion Rory MacDonald will challenge middleweight champ Gegard Mousasi on September 29, and says he will add the weight differently.

I disagreed with his approach to it from the very beginning, said MacDonald to Marc Raimondi for MMA Fighting. I think he learned a lesson from it as well, so I think I have a good approach to it. … I’ve been already doing something just by chance. I’ve been trying to get a little bigger and stronger. But nothing really. I’m trying to stay comfortable at my normal weight. Not really. I’m not trying to gorge myself and get too big. I want to be fast, agile and strong.

MacDonald is a big welterweight, 6′ 0″ to GSP’s 5′ 10″. But Mousasi is a big middleweight, 6′ 2″ and came down from light heavyweight. Then again, MacDonald is so game he has spoken of moving up to light heavyweight to challenge division champion Ryan Bader. MacDonald wants to more firmly establish himself as one of the best fighters on Earth. While the UFC has deeper divisions than does Bellator, in Bellator he can jump divisions more readily.

When you take a pound-for-pound style fight in other weight classes or with guys who have proven themselves against a lot of guys, it opens eyes and gets people talking, said MacDonald. I’m excited. I’m not too worried about it, at the end of the day. I know he’s a big challenge.

Things are just coming one after another right now. God has really blessed me with the things that I have aspired to do in my career. I’m very grateful for these things. … It’s gonna be a great year. I’m very happy.

Whatever happens vs. Mousasi, next step will be entering Bellator’s great Grand Prix, so, yah, there’s quite a year ahead.
