The top of the UFC lightweight division is in a state of flux, with division GOAT Khabib Nurmagomedov having announced his retirement, and league president Dana White trying to lure him back with a fight that could extend his record to the 30-0 that Khabib’s father long planned for. Unfortunately, the sole fight of interest to “The Eagle” is welterweight GOAT Georges St-Pierre (they walk around at about the same weight), and the UFC isn’t offering it. Even if that fight does happen, it won’t be at 155. So Nurmagomedov is done with the division.

The real question now is who will fight for the belt? Candidates that could end up in the title fight include Michael Chandler, Justin Gaethje, Conor McGregor, Charles Oliveira, and Dustin Poirier. During a recent Joe Rogan Experience podcast, the host said one fighter stands above the rest in deserving a title shot – Charles Do Bronx Oliveira, who is coming off a dismantling of Tony Ferguson.

Watching him do that to Tony, I was like, ‘I can’t even believe what I am seeing,’ said Rogan. He just dominated every second of that fight. It was bananas.

[Ferguson vs. Nurmagomedov] would have been an interesting fight to see, but the way Oliveira controlled [Ferguson] on the ground… We wanted to know what would happen because Tony is dangerous off his back – he submitted Kevin Lee… I’m more interested to see Oliveira fight for the title than anybody in that division.

I believe [Nurmagomedov] is the GOAT of that division, but I don’t know what would have happened with Oliveira until you see it. With Oliveira there are moments – like when Cub Swanson knocked him out – there’s moments when you go back in his career and you go, ‘Oh, this guy is not the greatest.’ Then you see him in some fights like the Kevin Lee fight – where he submitted Kevin Lee – submits Tony in a spectacular way. He’s just so technical. Everything’s so good. He’s never out of position. He doesn’t force anything. Everything looks f***ing amazing.

Man, I want to see him fight for the title. I wanna see him fight Dustin. I want to see him fight Conor. I want to see him fight whoever else is in that division, Gaethje.

UG, who do you want to see fight for the title, who do you think will fight for the next title, and who will win?
