Greg Jackson is one of the greatest trainers in MMA history, having guided, among countless others, arguably the two greatest fighters in our sport’s history, Georges St. Pierre and Jon Jones, to a number of momentous victories. And if you ask around, Jackson has not spent a very great deal of time at Jackson Wink MMA Academy in Albuquerque, NM for the last couple of years.

Now Russell Contreras for Axios reports that Jackson is considering a run for the Federal House seat in New Mexico being vacated by Deb Haaland, who has been tabbed by President-elect Joe Biden as the next Secretary of the Interior. Haaland will, if confirmed by the Senate, be the first Native American Cabinet secretary in U.S. history.

“I’m exploring a run because I care about this community and I feel I can make a difference,” explained Jackson to Contreras.

The coach says he is passionate about criminal justice reform, and wants to see officers trained in the use of MMA techniques, in order to avoid, if possible, the use of deadly force. Jackson also said he would like to see the expansion of Federal early childcare programs, in order to fight poverty in the Land of Enchantment. New Mexico is currently #2 in the USA for highest poverty levels, edged out only by Mississippi, barely. You’ve seen it in the documentary Breaking Bad.

In the case of a vacated seat, the rules in New Mexico mandate that the party bypass a primary, and select a nominee for the special election. Although Jackson reports he leans democratic, his potential run is of concern to the Democratic Party in NM. In 1997, Republican Bill Redmond won a formerly reliably Democratic congressional seat in Northern New Mexico, when independent candidates and the Green Party took votes away from the Democratic nominee.

So whatever side of the political spectrum you fall on, Greg Jackson has something for you to cheer about – MMA for cops and he leans D, or MMA for cops and he could play the role of Ralph Nader in the 2000 election that saw George Bush beat Al Gore by 543 votes in Florida, and win the presidency.
