Jorge Masvidal and Nate Diaz fought at UFC 244 in November for the Baddest Mother F@$%er belt, with Masvidal winning via doctor stoppage after Round 3, and pushing his streak to three, with three performance bonuses, the fastest KO in UFC history record, and of course the belt. Diaz has not fought since, but Masvidal took a short-notice title fight vs. welterweight champion Kamaru Usman, losing a unanimous decision.
It was widely believed that the next fight for both of them was a rematch, However, at the UFC 253 post-fight press conference, president Dana White said the rematch may happen, but it won’t be next. The backstory of former ATT teammates and now bitter, bitter rivals Masivdal and Colby Covington is too great.
It’s very possible [Masivdal vs. Covington] is next, said White. … I don’t know if we’ve even talked to Nate yet. But yeah, after the Colby fight [vs . Tyron Woodley], how do you not make that fight? That’s the fight that makes sense.
The Nate Diaz rematch is going to be there no matter what happens.
White did not provide any details on where and when, but Covington spoke with Newsmax and said the league was looking at December.
The UFC has not released the full December schedule, and there is usually a year-end show late in the year, but the natural event would be UFC 256 on December 12, 2020 at TBA. The card to date is:
UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman defending vs. Gilbert Burns
UFC women’s featherweight championship Amanda Nunes defending vs. Megan Anderson
Women’s strawweights Carla Esparza vs. Amanda Ribas
Middleweights Omari Akhmedov vs. Marvin Vettori
The addition of Masvidal vs. Covington, with the winner, especially if it is “Chaos,” getting a title shot would make a lot of sense.
