Robert Whittaker dropped to middleweight in 2014, and then won eight fights in a row, earning seven performance bonus, and successfully won and defended the belt. After a 16 month break due to mental and physical health, Whittaker lost the title to Israel Adesanya at UFC 243 in October of 2019. Whittaker bounced back with decisive decision wins over Darren Till and at UFC 254 on Saturday, over Jared Cannonier. In the meantime, Adesanya too won two, decisioning Yoel Romero and stopping Paulo Costa.

At the post-fight press conference, UFC president Dana White said an Adesanya vs. Whittaker rematch makes sense now.

It’s very appealing to me, said White. It’s the fight that makes sense right now. Adesanya has a lot of options, but the fight that makes the most sense is Whittaker. I thought Cannonier was gonna be a much tougher challenge for him. He looked good tonight. So the Adesanya fight makes sense.

Whittaker is on record as saying he doesn’t want to fight until 2021. However, earlier this week he was asked about fighting in December.

Aw, f***, I don’t know,” said Whittaker, before pausing to collect his thoughts. “I’ll worry about that then, honestly, because I’d have to talk it out with my team and if they thought it was the best move, they’d have a hell of a convincing job ahead of them. Otherwise, I don’t have to worry about it. The only fight that’s in my sights is Saturday and that’s the only one that matters at this point.

If Whittaker isn’t next for “The Last Stylebener, other possibilities include the winner of Till vs. Jack Hermansson on December 5, or a superfight vs. Jon Jones.

UG, who do you most want to see Whittaker fighter next?
