Alexa Grasso made a big splash in her UFC debut in 2016, pushing her record to 9-0 with a decision over Heather Jo Clark, that followed back-to-back Fight of the Night victories in Invicta FC. However, the Mexican fighter struggled at strawweight, going just 2-3 and missing weight once, before moving up to flyweight last year.
Grasso looked dominant in her last two fights at flyweight, with wins over Ji-Yeon Kim and most recently, at UFC Vegas 19, over Maycee Barber. She looked so good on Saturday that on a recent episode of the DC & Helwani podcast, former champ champ Daniel Cormier said Grasso could be the best boxer in women’s MMA.
Here goes DC with the grand statement,” began Cormier. “Alexa Grasso may be the best boxer, pure boxer in all of female mixed martial arts… again, Joanna is a kickboxer, Valentina is a kickboxer, Amanda Nunes – kickboxer.
While Barber appeared to be a potential superstar, and to many including UFC president Dana White still does, Grasso too has rightly seen her star rise.
Grasso is a girl we were looking at a long time ago, said White post-fight. We thought she was going to be the Ronda Rousey of Mexico, you know what I mean? She had a couple of speed bumps in her career but boy she’s on point now. Her punching is crisp and clean, and the distance that she kept, she couldn’t look any more perfect tonight going against an absolute savage.
Until the debut of Claressa Shields, the obvious answer for best female boxing in MMA is Holly Holm. And Shields’ skills may not translate well to the cage. UG, who in your opinion has the best boxing in WMMA? And while we are on the topic, who has the best boxing in MMA?
