Wing Chun is a concept-based martial art style originating in China. It is the original martial art employed by the late martial arts film legend Bruce Lee. Wing Chun is primarily striking based but there are some grappling elements to it, particularly ‘trapping’ which is often cited in Bruce Lee’s martial system of Jeet Kune Do.

In this friendly, respectful sparring session between two traditional Chinese martial arts practitioners we see a variety of techniques employed. Open-handed defensive stances are used by both practitioners, which enable them to block and parry attacks more easily than a close-handed stance.

Both men land a variety of side-kicks to their opponent’s midsection. Side-kicks are now seen much more in high level MMA completion and are employed with great success by Jon Jones, one of the best pound for pound fighters in the world and possibly ever.

The sparring is very respectful and both men are obviously not trying to hurt each other but still are working their techniques and defensive skills. It is similar to ‘technique sparring’ which many MMA gyms are doing now as to prevent long term injuries.

A trapping technique is employed at the thirty second mark by the man in the white shirt, Pierre-Francois Flores, also known as Nam Ngu. He could have really wrenched that technique if he wanted to but that is the level of respect here shown by both men.

So you see, traditional martial arts have their place in MMA. It is not about the specific art though, but rather the practitioner.
