MMA vs boxing is a popular topic right now with the Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor super-fight rapidly approaching but it is important to remember that they are two very different sports.

Yes, they are both combat sports that allow punching but that is where the similarities end. The defense, for instance, is completely different. In boxing, the big padded gloves allow for much more defensive opportunities when it comes to blocking and parrying. Also, because of that, those big, bulky gloves are harder to land clean shots with too.

The range is also way different in both sports. In MMA, particularly, you have much more to worry about. There is always the threat of a takedown plus low kicks too which means you have to stay much farther away.

In this boxing match from 2015, we see how a UFC fighter does in there against an actual professional boxer with several pro boxing fights already to his name.

For the UFC fighter, Mike Perry, this was his one and only boxing match and judging on how it ends, it is no surprise there.

What we find out in this video is that while Perry, like Conor, certainly has a lot of punching power but power can only take you so far in boxing and there is a lot more that goes into it besides simply how hard you can hit.

Someone who just focuses on one sport is always going to have a huge advantage over someone coming from another sport and like we see here in this video, Perry loses this one by a pretty brutal knockout, after a big overhand lands from his opponent, Kenneth McNeil.
