Mosley is a former three-weight world champion (Lightweight, Welterweight, Light middleweight), and a former lineal champion at welterweight (twice) and at light middleweight. In 2000 he was the International Boxing Hall of Fame Figher of the Year, and The Ring magazine pound for pound best fighter in the world. Ring gave him the same honors in 2001. At the time of this contest, Mosley had just fought Floyd Mayweather Jr., stunning him in the second, but eventually losing a decisive unanimous decision.
There have been suggestions that Shaq must have held back to avoid hurting Mosley. Those remarks are ignorant of reality. In reality, this was a sparring exhibition, with Mosley taking it pretty easy on the big, scrappy man.
