Famed boxing trainer Freddie Roach appeared recently on Inside MMA to talk about Floyd Mayweather’s attempts to put together a boxing match with UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor. The coach related that Mayweather had asked him to accept a job coaching McGregor.
“Mayweather did come by my gym last week and he asked me to take that job if it’s offered to me,” said Roach, as transcribed by Anton Tabuena for BE. “Because he told me the fight is going to happen and we’re going to make a lot of money.”
“I told Mayweather, it would take me three years at least to get him ready to fight you. I don’t think it’s really possible for a MMA fighter to fight a boxer. I don’t think it’s really fair. Mayweather would out box him all day long. I mean Conor McGregor seems like a tough guy and all that, but being a tough guy doesn’t really help you in boxing.”
“Mayweather is the best boxer in the world and he would not even lose a round against a guy with Conor’s experience. He looks like an okay boxer. He’s a very good MMA fighter, but this is boxing. He’s kind of a beginner at boxing.”
“If I could help him, I would definitely do that. I work 12 hours a day in the gym, I like to stay busy. I think we could help him, and if he came and asked, I would love to help him.”
FOX Sports host Colin Cowherd says the rumored boxing match between Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor is going to happened and that I have already booked two rooms for Sept. 17 and 18 in Las Vegas.”
However, Roach said in discussion with Mayweather, “there was no date mentioned at all.”
The real problem with Roach training McGregor is that the better he gets at conventional boxing, he worse he will do against the greatest boxer of his generation. If he is to have any shot at all of avoiding sheer, utter, and total domination, it would be through an entirely unconventional approach.
