Earlier this week the UK Sun, an English tabloid newspaper, sent a buzz around the combat sports world when it reported that a boxing match between Floyd Mayweather Jr, and UFC champion Conor McGregor was being negotiated.
The Sun stated that the fight was being talked about and that the purses had even been determined. UFC President Dana White recently refuted the fight to Yahoo Sports, but Floyd Mayweather Sr. confirmed the possibility of the fight and tonight Mayweather Jr. himself hinted it was possible as well:
FightHype: Floyd, you mentioned that there’s a fight tonight, but you always seem to be the center of attention. They are talking about you, they have fighting an MMA fighter, they have you doing how this stuff. How do you…
Mayweather Jr.: It’s possible. You know, it’s possible. There was a name that was shot at me, but the rumors that you all been hearing are the rumors that I started. May not be a rumor. So keep your fingers crossed, it may be a boxer versus a MMA fighter. So we just don’t know.
FightHype: How excited would you be about that Floyd, merging the two sports for once?
Mayweather Jr.: Well you already know my number. I talk about that when I was on TV the other day. Every time I go out there and compete at the highest level, my numbers of course a hundred million or better. I feel like I can demand that because I’ve broken all records in the sport of boxing. And one of these guys behind me, they gonna break my record, I already know.
FightHype: Is that your ultimate goal, to train somebody to do Mayweather numbers?
Mayweather Jr.: Just to do good numbers. I want these guys to become a household name. become a PPV star, and it can happen. I did it. All the legendary champions that paved the way for me to be where I’m at. Lot of champions are extremely jealous of me. It is what it is, so.
