Canadian pop star Justin Bieber trains regularly at boxing gyms, most recently at the Chelsea Piers Sports Center in Manhattan. He walked in with a large gentleman he called ‘Doc’ and the pair reportedly sparred for almost three hours.

Neither gentleman boxes properly, but they seemed to be enjoying themselves.

Bieber appears to have learned to box from close personal friend Floyd Mayweather Jr., standing in a wide stance, in a modified Philly Shell with lead hand dropped and the right tight, pulling straight back from punches, employing quick strikes with his left to bring it all together, and following up with the right when the left landed. FMJ employed it to become the greatest boxer of his generation, and perhaps the greatest defensive boxer ever.

The thing is, this is a highly specialized style, and Justin Bieber is no Floyd Mayweather Jr. But then again, who is?

Doc alternately kept his hands high Peek-A-Boo style, or dropped them low, or held them in an orthodox fashion. Doc helpfully encouraged Bieber to remain aggressive.

Doc appeared to be pantomiming sparring, keeping Bieber busy, without launching a genuine attack. Doc was big, did not flinch from incoming shots, and can doubtless defend himself (or perhaps others) quite ably. That said and with no disrespect, he is no kind of boxer, dropping his hands waist low to throw a jab, pulling straight back from punches, and otherwise betraying that he has not grown up in the ring.

All in all however, this boxing with someone twice his size went down way better than it did the last time her tried it, in Cleveland. That one ended up with Bieber on the bottom of a pile of people, but he did appear to get a piece of the much larger man, and reported afterwards that he did not have a scratch on him.
