The realm of boxing, and combat sports on the whole, is rife with debate. Fans regularly display their unwavering ability to debate nearly anything. Who is the best fighter? Who won that close decision? What game plan should have been implemented? And on and on.
Occasionally something occurs that puts all those watching in a place that exists far beyond debate, yet resonates through the world of combat sports in a way that guarantees it will be discussed and examined for many years to come.
One such occurrence was the legendary first round between Marvelous Marvin Hagler and Tommy The Hitman Hearns. Whether watching live as it happened or on YouTube over 30 years later, there’s not a combat sports fan alive who won’t agree that this is one of the greatest rounds to ever grace our world.
Truly a round that would not be done its proper justice by a blow by blow account of what happened inside those three exciting, action packed and unforgettable minutes, this violent poetry in motion is something that must be seen to be believed. To this day, many fans continue to comment that Round 1 of Marvin Hagler vs. Tommy Hearns is so brutally cinematic that it looks like something ripped straight from the silver screen.
While there’s never been any debate as to whether it was one of the greatest rounds in boxing history, many still argue over who won the round, (with two judges scored it for Hagler and one scoring it for Hearns). In the end, the judges’ scorecards meant nothing, as Marvin Hagler would go on to win by TKO in the third round.
The War took place on April 15, 1985 at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, Nevada
