Floyd Mayweather Jr. is the greatest boxer of his generation, and quite possibly the best defensive boxer in the entire history of the ‘The Sweet Science’. And he is the highest paid athlete on Earth. So when he tell you how to punch, listen.
Carefully.
And then do exactly what he says.
Mayweather was visiting ESPN’s headquarters and spoke with Brian Kenny, who then anchored the 6 p.m. edition of SportsCenter for ESPN, served as the host of ESPN2’s Friday Night Fights, and had his own show on ESPN Radio named The Brian Kenny Show.
The men were standing by a Punching Machine, and Kenny threw a straight right, getting a score of 324.
The Punching Machine was not impressed.
“Born loser, born loser,” explained the machine to the amusement of several onlookers.
Mayweather had seen enough.
“I’m going to show you how to get better,” he said.
“Turn more like this,” he continued, beginning in a more sideways stance, and then driving his hips through all the way. FMJ then took a short step with the lead foot, and directed Kenny to punch all the way through.
“You’ve got to push through him,” he said. “What we’re going to do, push off the back leg, we’re going to push off the back.”
“And don’t punch too late [when your body is already close], you’ve got to punch on time. WHOOM. We’re going to slam through it this time.”

Kenny was standing in an improved stance, but with his striking hand open.
“No, no,” explained Mayweather. “You have to close your hand early.”
Kenny then indicated he was trying a palm heel strike.
“Hell no,” said FMJ scornfully, making a fist. “We’re going to step through, and push through it. Shoot through it. LET’S GO BRIAN – shoot through it.”
Kenny struck The Punching Machine.
The score this time was 646, an increase of nearly 100%, in just one minute of instructor from the undefeated champion.
Mayweather’s next goal is to equal Rocky Marciano’s record of 49 professional wins without a loss, ever. If anyone can do it, it’s Mayweather.
