An infamous moment in mixed martial arts history was when Randy Couture dropped Tim Sylvia in the initial exchange of their heavyweight title fight. Couture retired nearly a year prior to the bout after suffering a second knockout loss to Chuck Liddell. Sylvia, the promotion’s champion at the time was riding a six fight winning streak.
Couture faked an inside lowkick and launched an overhand right that floored the 6’8 Maine-iac. Tim’s bell was thoroughly rung and he never seemed to fully recover. At 43 years of age, Couture went on to win the title in a very one sided decision.
Since most of your weight and momentum is behind the punch, overhand strikes produce lots of force. Chuck Liddell’s go to punch was the looping overhand right. Dan Henderson’s H-Bomb has separated many opponents from their consciousness. When at an extreme height deficit, overhands replace traditional hooks. They are handy especially when an opponent lacks sound head movement. Mark Hunt defeated The Skyscraper Stefan Struve with a crushing overhand left.
In the clip below we see a perfect example of overhand strikes neutralizing a significant difference in height.
Ann Wolfe at 5’9 was significantly shorter than the 6’6 former NCAA Basketball product Vonda Ward. Throughout the first round Ward repeatedly left her chin in the air as she threw and evaded strikes. Wolfe opened the bout with a solid left hook; and used great head movement to dodge Ward’s punches.
With her hands low, Vonda threw a straight right; Wolfe countered the shot with a fierce overhand right. The punch was so devastating that Vonda collapsed immediately and remained on the canvas for over a minute. Wolfe snapped Ward’s unbeaten streak and sent her to the hospital with a neck concussion.
