A hook punch is the most common first punch thrown in any street fight encounter. So it makes sense that learning to defend it is one the most important techniques you can learn.

A hook punch refers to using your lead hand in a sweeping (or hooking) motion to attack the head of your opponent. It can be a devastating punch when thrown correctly as you can use the motion of your hips to generate power. Also, there are several targets on a person’s head that can cause damage including the back of the ear, the temple, and the jaw.

In this video, Master Wong shows proper technique to defend against this punch. It is important to know that just because it is the most common attack, it doesn’t necessarily mean someone will throw this punch first, so you should be versed in the defense of all attacks.
