In every sport, there are different levels of competition. The best player on your high school team may not have stood a chance playing with guys on the college team, and those guys may never have stood a chance playing with guys who competed professionally.

In combat sports, determining where one stands and at which level they can compete is often a painful process in which one sacrifices their own consciousness to better know their place in the sport.

One such man to learn his place the hard way was long-time British bare-knuckle boxing champion Joe Savage. For years, Savage called out the best the sport of boxing had to offer. Mike Tyson, Lennox Lewis and Riddick Bowe had all turned him down. Unfortunately for Savage, lesser-known journeyman Smokin’ Bert Cooper, known for his punching power and wild brawls, accepted his challenge.

From the moment the bell rings, it is apparent the two men have different levels of training and have faced far different levels in competition, as Savage is unable to land a punch on Cooper, who moves well while looking to counter.

At approximately the 30-second mark, Cooper lands a big left hand that sends Savage falling to the canvas. Although Savage’s bell had clearly been rung, he returns to his feet with relative ease. Moments later, Smokin’ Bert Cooper lands a one-two that sends the bare-knuckle boxing champ to the mat face- first, ending the fight for good.

While Savage’s skills had been enough to conquer many an amateur foe is many an unregulated contest, the abilities of a professional boxer quickly proved to be much more than he could handle.
