If you’ve ever spent time watching the UFC, you might have wondered what would happen if law enforcement were to ever cross paths with a high-level mixed martial arts fighter. The video below will hopefully be the only answer we ever get to that question.

The mixed martial artist that the two police officers take on isn’t just any fighter, it is undefeated UFC featherweight prospect Brian Ortega who is known for his exceptional ground game. Brian has had three fights in the UFC, winning two and another being overturned to a no-contest.
Maybe if more police precincts had Gracie Survival Tactic certified officers we would see less stories in the news about unnecessary police violence. Training in Gracie Jiu-Jitsu not only teaches you how to defend yourself, but in most cases it will simultaneously humble you while raising your confidence. Which is something that almost everyone could benefit from, not just cops.
The simple truth is, the bad guys are learning. With the explosive growth of MMA around the world, basic submissions, positions, and fight strategies have never been so familiar to everyday people around the world. But unfortunately, when people are learning how to fight on YouTube, or at any of the hole-in-the-wall MMA gyms that are popping up everywhere, they rarely, if ever, learn the moral and philosophical aspects that will ensure the safe and ethical application of the techniques, and this presents a very serious threat to law enforcement professionals around the world.
The objective of the Gracie Survival Tactics program is to mitigate this threat by teaching military and law enforcement professionals the essential 3-phase defense strategy specifically designed for unanticipated violent physical assaults by highly aggressive subjects.
Phase 1: Neutralize the threat.
Phase 2: Retain control of your weapons.
Phase 3: Achieve a position of advantage.
In this video you’ll see several of the techniques taught in the GST Level 2 Instructor Certification Course demonstrated by Rener Gracie. Then, you’ll see a Arrest Simulation Drill that was conducted on the last day of training. Two officers were randomly selected from the group and were told to arrest Brian Ortega who would resist them with all his might.
Although normally the officers would spend much more time verbally commanding the subject, since this drill was specifically designed to test their hands-on arrest and control procedures, they were instructed not to spend any time talking to the subject. Also, with knowledge of Brian’s Fighting Prowess, these cops could have easily justify escalating his force, but once again, these officers were exclusively testing their hands-on arrest techniques on a trained MMA fighter. Notice how the officers were able to overcome Brian without having to escalate to strikes, batons, etc. Even though they were all going 100%, none of them were injured. Although Brian had planned to surprised them with a knife, he was so overwhelmed that he was unable to effectively use the knife.
