In this match from the 2007 US Open, future Ultimate Fighter winner Ryan Hall grapples Ultimate Fighter winner Nate Diaz in a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu match.
Hall and Diaz are both known as some of the UFC’s top jiu-jitsu fighters utilizing striking mixed with ground skills to win fights. But as this is just a BJJ match, no striking was allowed.
The match starts with Hall immediately dropping to an open guard position and Diaz on top trying to pass. Hall works from a quarter guard and then goes inverted for a quick second before attempting a sweep from open guard. Diaz grabs the gi to stop the sweep, but Hall is able to scramble up and attack for a take down. As Diaz stands, Hall jumps to his back. Diaz rolls to the mat, but Hall is able to keep back control.
As the two move out of bounds, the referee re positions them in the center of the mat with Hall still on the back of Diaz. Hall spent some time on Diaz’s back, but was unable to finish. In a good scramble, Diaz was able to escape, turn into Hall take top position in side mount. Diaz spends the next couple minutes controlling top of side control, threatening a submission here and there. He eventually secures a strong kimura and gets the submission win.
