Fights usually come down to a few select submissions that are time tested and cage approved. The armbar, rear naked choke, guillotine and the triangle choke. While witnessing these are always entertaining, we can’t forget that there are hundreds of different submissions and variations on submissions that we never see.
Let’s take a look at 3 submissions that are not only beautiful, but rare in the cage, and deadly, too.
3) The Von Flue choke
The Von Flue choke is named after Jason Von Flue, an American mixed martial artist who was the first to ever pull off this move back in 2006. If you are in side control position and your opponent still is trying to catch you in a guillotine, you can press onto his neck with your opposite shoulder, thus choking him out. The Von Flue choke is very effective but rare since nowadays most of the MMA fighters are aware of it and do their best not to get caught in it.

2) The Gogoplata
The Gogoplata choke is a submission that can be applied if you’re in guard position, usually. What you want to do is trap both of your opponent’s arms and choke him out with your shin. Needless to say, it’s a very painful submission. Few fighters have managed to pull it in a fight. Nick Diaz and Shinya Aoki did, though. The former submitted Takanori Gomi back at PRIDE 34 with a beautiful Gogoplata choke; the latter submitted Katsuhiko Nagata in 2008 with an INSANE Gogoplata from the mount position.

1) The Twister
The Twister is a spinal cord crank that has been popularized by grappling ace Eddie Bravo. Chang Sung Jung, aka ‘The Korean Zombie’, is the first ever to pull off a Twister inside the Octagon. Watch as he applies this beautiful (and utterly painful) submission to Leonard Garcia en route to a decisive victory.
